Behind the Logo — R J Padgett

When R J Padgett Probate, Wills, and Trusts Solicitor in Porlock, Minehead approached me to design their brand identity, it was clear from the start that this was a project that deserved real care and attention. This is a firm that handles important and sensitive matters for its clients — Estate Administration, Probate, Wills, and Trust services — and the identity needed to reflect that without feeling cold or corporate.
The Brief
The brief was thorough and well considered, which always makes for a better outcome. The key requirements were clear: the firm's initials — R, J, and P — needed to work as a strong, coherent mark. The identity had to feel authoritative, warm, and distinctive. And crucially, it needed to be strong enough to sit on a traditional brass plaque — which immediately told me this had to be a mark with real weight and simplicity.
On colour, there was a clear instinct towards warmth — a coral red as the main colour, with gold featuring somewhere. The brief was also explicit about what to avoid: the sea of sans-serif typefaces and cool blues and burgundies that dominate law firm branding. This identity needed to stand apart.
The Concept
My starting point was the monogram. Monogram-based marks have a long heritage in professional services — particularly legal and financial practices — and for good reason. A well-crafted monogram carries a sense of personal commitment and gravitas that a purely typographic or abstract mark sometimes can't match.
The challenge was making the initials R, J, and P work together as a single, satisfying mark rather than just a collection of letters. After working through a range of sketches and arrangements — overlapping, stacked, side by side — I arrived at a solution where all the letters came together in one simple mark. The enclosure gives the mark a stamp-like quality that works beautifully across applications, from a website header to a brass plaque.

Typography
With the monogram established, the wordmark — R J PADGETT — needed to carry the same sense of quiet authority. A classic serif was the natural choice, carefully tracked out to give the lettering an open, confident feel. The spacing was important: too tight and it loses its sense of quality, too loose and it falls apart. Getting that balance right is one of those details that makes the difference between a logo that looks professional and one that truly feels it.
Colour
The palette centres on a warm coral red paired with a soft gold. This combination has a long association with tradition and quality, and these specific tones keep it feeling contemporary and warm rather than stuffy or old-fashioned. It reproduces cleanly in print, holds up beautifully on screen, and — importantly — the contrast works well for applications like the brass plaque where only a single colour is available.
The Result
The client was kind enough to share their experience of the process:
"Choosing someone to design our branding was a big decision for us — it's the face of our business for years to come.
Phil made the whole process straightforward and collaborative from the start. He took the time to understand who we are, who we help, and the feel we wanted to convey. The concepts and visuals he produced helped us quickly find the right direction.
We're delighted with the final result. The logo is professional, refined, and perfectly captures the quality and character of our firm. It's exactly what we were hoping for — even if we couldn't quite articulate it at the start.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Phil to anyone looking for professional, high quality design."
— R J Padgett
That last line means a great deal. Every branding project I take on starts with listening — really understanding what a business is about, who it serves, and what it needs to communicate. When that process works well, the result is an identity the client feels is genuinely theirs.
